For high school students, a five-day field trip to San Felipe, Mexico

News > Schools Mesa Grande Academy is a local educational tradition Mesa Grande Academy in Calimesa is a kindergarten through grade 12 Seventh-day Adventist Christian School accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. The school was established in 1928/29 in the home of its teacher in Yucaipa. In 1938, it was moved to the basement of the Seventh-day Adventist Church on Avenue E. When the congregation was ready to build a new church in 1947, the school was moved to Avenue A in Yucaipa and back to the Avenue E in 1948 upon completion of the new church. Mesa Grande Academy was re-established at it's current location on Fremont Street in 1974. Test scores MGA students in the past 10 years (1997-2007) have been consistently higher than the state and national scores. Principal Alfred Riddle can provide detailed information. Field academics Every fall MGA fifth graders go to Catalina and spend three days snorkeling, studying invertebrates, sharks and marine life in general. Every spring the sixth graders head to Astro Camp for three days of intense hands on science activities from morning till night with one hour off during the day. Astrophysics such as astronomy, night vision, atmosphere, lights and lasers are a few of the topics explored. The eighth graders take an annual history tour to the Capitol in Sacramento. There they see and learn first hand about California State government. For high school students, a five-day field trip to San Felipe, Mexico, is where students are actively involved in the study of inter-tidal marine life and the flora and fauna of the surrounding desert. High school students also spend four days in Ensenada, Mexico, interacting with locals, visiting historical and tourist areas, participating in a church service, all while living with local residents. Life skills Every spring the freshman go on three single-day field trips to a local restaurant wearing business attire and learn proper dining etiquette and to KV Paint and Home Depot where they learn room design. With these skills they know how to dine properly and up-date a home. The students in the performing arts classes tour each spring for five days, during which time they perform for school and church groups. They also have the opportunity to do other educational activities in the musical/drama realm. Community service MGA has the opportunity to teach more than just academics. Students are actively involved in community service learning projects which include improvements in mobile home parks. Once a month on a Friday morning, one of the high school classes paints, cleans up yards, makes minor repair and performs other needed tasks at Villa Calimesa Mobile Home Park. Mission trips Christian Youth Builders goes to Mexico every fall and helps build churches or class rooms depending on the need for that year. CYB also runs vacation Bible School for the children in the evening. A second mission trip (Amor ministries) also goes to Mexico and builds houses for families in need.
