Happiest Place on Earth: Tijuana... the Under-23 team prepares for Olympic qualifiers
Thursday, January 17, 2008 Tacos, Tequila and El Tri! This has nothing to do with Chivas USA and everything to do with the happiest place on Earth...Tijuana! Mexico's little Tri, the Under-23 team, will prepare for the Olympic qualifiers in March by playing Paraguay iin Tijuana's new Estadio Caliente stadium on Feb. 27. The city's new soccer-only stadium is located adjacent to the old Caliente racetrack about 15 minutes east of the border. Right now the stadium seats about 13,000, but former Mayor of Tijuana Hank Rhon is hoping that the stadium will be up to about 35,000 seats (with luxury suites, bars and a tequileria - I'm just kidding about the tequileria part) by the summer. If the expansion is completed by June, then la selecion mayor will play a World Cup qualifier in Tijuana. El Tri would host the winner of the Belize-St. Kitts & Nevis home-and-home series on June 1 if that game where to take place. A source in Tijuana tells me that people are working overtime to try to make it happen. If the stadium looks like it will be completed in time for the game, than the match will be announced one month before the game. Posted by Jaime Cárdenas at 11:22 AM Labels: Mexico
