Step 1
Drive south from San Diego to the Mexican border,
valid American passport in hand. Do not waste time or money applying
for a tourist card at the border unless you plan to travel farther south
than Rosarito.
Step 2
Take the Rosarito-Ensenada toll road. Select any
of the four Rosarito exits and drive west until you get to the beach.
Park and unload your full wetsuit -- a must if you visit between October
and April -- and board.
Step 3
Hit the surf anywhere along the several miles of
good beach. Conditions vary according to tide and weather, from "fun,
punchy and rippable" to "fast, hollow and barreling," according to
Surfing San Diego website. Look for consistent swells from the west or
northwest in winter, south or southwest in summer months.
Step 4
Try a few of the local favorite surfing spots
sprinkled down the beach just south of Rio Golf Resort. Surf Baja Malibu
at about the level of the 22 km mark on the toll road for one of the
best beach breaks in northern Baja. Or try Rosarita Beach itself, from
the Festival Plaza Hotel to the power plant, for consistent waves that
occasionally become excellent.
