Sailing from San Diego to Puerto Vallarta-30th annual race

San Diego/Puerto Vallarta Challenge awaits you
'San Diego/Puerto Vallarta Race'    San Diego Yacht Club

The pristine scenery and excellent open racing along with great camaraderie are some of the things that await participants and spectators in the 30th biennial San Diego/Puerto Vallarta race which is set to take place from the 1-10 March 2012.

Racers are already signing up and will take on the challenge of beating last year’s record setting pace of three days, eight hours, fifty-two minutes and one second set by Akela owned by Bill Turpin and David Janes.

Akela, a Reichel / Pugh 77, averaged 12 knots over the course, at times reaching speeds of 31 knots. Many of the boats reported speeds in excess of 25 knots during the race. The winner, based on corrected time, was Peligroso, a Kernan 70, (pictured here) owned by SDYC member Lorenzo Berho.

The biennial challenge is hosted by the San Diego Yacht Club and begins in San Diego Bay just off Shelter Island on March 1, 2012. Racers cross the finish line off Punta Mita in Banderas Bay, Mexico, a distance of 1000 nautical miles.

Spectators / family members desiring to meet the boats in Puerto Vallarta may make hotel arrangements at the Marival Resort or the Four Diamond Marival Residences & World Spa, Nuevo Vallarta. The Awards Dinner will be held on Saturday, March 10th at the Marival Residences.

Racers may also take advantage of the 22nd edition of the Mexican Ocean Racing Circuit (MEXORC) regatta and the 'Regatta Copa Mexico' which takes place on Banderas Bay beginning on March 11th. MEXORC and the Regatta Copa Mexico are a joint effort between the Mexican Government and the Mexican Sailing Federation and feature seven days of racing over eight days in one of the finest sailing areas in the world. MEXORC is offering some excellent incentives. For more information contact Laura Neale at mexorc.staff@gmail.com or the MEXORC website www.mexorc.com.
